1945-1957: The tram as a beating boy for traffic problems and subway dreams
After the second world war the car federations win in strength. For her roof organisation, the " Basel traffic league " the tram is an obstacle in the modern traffic. She demands therefore the immediate conversation of the tram line 3 to trolley bus as well as all lines in the city centre. By order of the government, the BVB presents in October 1951 plans for an "Unterpflasterbahn". Seven variations with different tunnel distances and up to 12 underground stations are proposed. In view of the high costs the opinions are divided. On the 31st December, 1957 the first tram line is put out of service: It is the line 5 to French Saint-Louis.
1958-1970: Tram suspensions, female staff and ticket machines
The subway projects stretching more than 15 years "save" the tram about the most violent anti-tram fights away. Victim of the "tram war" becomes the tram of line 2, which on the 3rd July 1966 was suspended between Schützenhaus - Spalentor - Johanniterbrücke - Bad. Bahnhof and switched to a trolley bus line. On the 12th April, 1961 the line 25 is changed to Hunigue to coach service. On 31st of August 1967 the "green Six" to German Lörrach is suspended. On the 8th February, 1968 the great council of Basel grants a loan for the purchase of 465 ticket machines. On the 6th July, 1970 all lines are changed to ticket machines.
