Free tram demos, the founding of the BLT
In September, 1971 the great council takes a traffic-political principle decision:"The precedence has to come up in the internal-urban and regional traffic to the public means of transportation before the private traffic". Smaller measures follow first, how locking surfaces and traffic light preference for trams and in 1972 the city centre barrier for all private motor vehicle traffic. In 1974 the Birseckbahn, the Birsigtalbahn, the tram Basel-Aesch and the Ueberlandbahn Basel-Pratteln merge to a new transportation company, the "Baselland Transport AG". The BLT becomes to the most important partner of the BVB with which plans gradually the rate group.
The U-Abo (farecard)
On the 1st March, 1984 the environment protection subscription card is introduced. It costs 35. Swiss francs a month - and is valid on the whole net of the BVB and BLT. The successful draught finds international recognition and many imitators. On the 1st June, 1987 the first integral rate group of Switzerland with "Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz" (TNW) is born.
First international Tramline of Europe after second world war
The great council of Basel agreed on 10th of January 2007 to a credit of f CHF 1 ' 280 ' 000 for the planning of a new tramline extension in Basel’s north city territory. Tramway line no 8 will be extended across the Swiss-German border and heading to Weil am Rhein’s railway station. An extension to the old city of Weil am Rhein is planned for the future. After 70 years this will the first realised tram extension of some more to come.
